While the origins of National Nurses Week – which is celebrated every year from May 6th to May 12th – date back to the 1950s, there may have never been a more critical time to recognize the selfless sacrifices of our nation’s nurses and praise their tireless efforts to keep us safe.

That is especially true of student nurses, including those in the Nursing Program at Malcolm X College, many of whom have been balancing their school work with helping to protect our city from COVID-19 by working or volunteering on the frontlines.

Below, meet two of Malcolm X’s student nurses – Shaquan Dupart and Jessica Joseph – and learn more about what inspired them to pursue a career in the medical field.

Shaquan, Jessica, and all of the other student nurses at Malcolm X represent the future of the profession – bright, empathetic, hardworking, and diverse. As we recognize their efforts on National Student Nurses Day (May 8th), part of National Nurses Week, we also want to thank them for their dedication, both to their studies and to their communities.

Happy National Student Nurses Day!
