Earlier this week, the Engineering program at Wright College was named a 2022 “Example of Excelencia” for its work to develop culturally-responsive practices that create academic and career success for Latino students.
Wright College is one of just 20 evidence-based programs across the United States recognized this year for its best practices by Excelencia in Education, a national organization focused on accelerating Latino student success in higher education.
“Wright College has a long-term commitment to intentionally serving our Latino students. That means high-quality education, holistic supports, and a focus on student success grounded in confianza,” said President David Potash of Wright College. “We are honored by this recognition from Excelencia in Education and could not be more proud, as it confirms that we are on the right track,” he said.
The organization’s “Examples of Excelencia” was created in 2005 and is the country’s only national effort to identify, aggregate, and promote evidence-based practices improving Latino student success in higher education. Wright College and other institutions were selected based on their proven ability to develop asset-based, culturally responsive practices that can improve success for Latino and other post-traditional students.
Wright College’s Engineering program was selected from 93 nationwide submissions representing 17 states, Washington D.C., and Puerto Rico. The program will be featured alongside other associate, baccalaureate, graduate, and community programs in Excelencia’s Growing What Works Database—the only national online, searchable database for institutional leaders, funders, and policymakers interested in identifying what works for Latino students.
On September 29, 2022, four of the 20 finalists will be announced as the 2022 Examples of Excelencia and recognized at the annual Celebración de Excelencia. The national announcement of these four programs will be made in Washington, D.C. and livestreamed online.
This isn’t the first time Wright College has received recognition from Excelencia in Education for its innovative approach to Latino student support. The college was one of only ten schools nationwide to receive the prestigious Seal of Excelencia certification from the organization in 2021. Earlier this summer, Wright College was highlighted in an Excelencia in Education report for its commitment to its students beyond graduation.
